Managing a Domain Portfolio Like a Pro
How to track, renew, and optimize a domain portfolio for maximum return — including when to drop names that aren't selling.
Portfolio vs. Collection
A portfolio is a curated set of assets managed for return. A collection is what happens when you register everything that sounds cool. The difference is discipline.
Portfolio Sizing
| Experience Level | Recommended Size |
| Beginner | 10–25 names |
| Intermediate | 25–100 names |
| Advanced | 100–500 names |
| Professional | 500+ (with systems) |
At scale, you need software. At <100 names, a spreadsheet works.
The Tracking Spreadsheet
Minimum columns to track:
- Domain name
- Registrar
- Renewal date
- Purchase price
- Current listing price
- Days listed
- Inbound inquiry count
- Notes
Key metric: Cost-per-name-per-year (renewal fees) vs. sale rate. If you're not selling 10–15% of your portfolio annually, your quality is too low or prices are too high.
Renewal Decisions
Every renewal is a buy decision. Before renewing, ask:
1. Has this name received any inquiries in the past year?
2. Has the market for this keyword improved or declined?
3. Can I sell this for 3× renewal cost within 12 months?
If all three are "no" — drop it.
Where to Park Domains
While holding, generate passive income through parking:
- Sedo: Best for finance/legal/real estate keywords
- ParkingCrew: Good fill rates for English keywords
- Bodis: Strong for brand names
Realistic expectation: ₹50–500/month per domain. Don't count on this — treat it as a bonus.
The 12-Month Review
Schedule a quarterly portfolio review:
1. Update valuations on 20% of your portfolio
2. Drop any names that haven't moved in 18+ months
3. Reinvest proceeds into 2–3 quality names
4. Update listing prices based on recent comps
Tax Considerations (India)
Domain income in India is taxed as:
- Short-term capital gains (held <24 months): at income slab rate
- Long-term capital gains (held 24+ months): 20% with indexation
Keep records of purchase receipts, renewal invoices, and sale agreements. Consult a CA for your specific situation.
